A 1,225sqm, 2-storey, low carbon in-operation expansion project that delivered a BCAR-compliant specialist classroom block, with a Building Energy Rating (BER) of A, and an air tightness test less than 1 m³/hr/m².

PROJECT INFO

With pupil numbers increasing year-on-year, Boyne Community School in Trim is benefitting from an additional 1,225 sqm modular classroom block.

The nearly zero-energy building (NZEB), which sits adjacent to the main school building, consists of two science rooms, a construction studies room, an engineering room, a general-purpose hall, toilets, staff room and staff offices.

As a standalone building, situated alongside the original Boyne Community School within the same site, the new two-storey block caters for both pupils and staff - and broadens the facilities on offer for the entire school community.

Delivering a sustainable building for the future, this highly insulated and airtight modular building has already achieved a ‘best in class’ BER A rating, which will help with efficiencies regarding the school’s running costs.

The 1,225m² classroom block was manufactured offsite, with the project taking just six months from start to completion.

M+E PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

Heating - Plumbing, ventilation and installation of a Split Air Conditioning Heating and cooling system. Room controls have been installed with ease of use in mind.

Plumbing - Boosted cold water is provided to all cold water outlets throughout the building with non-concussive taps to all wash hand basins within the toilet areas. Hot water is provided by efficient point-of-use water heaters.

Extract Ventilation - S&P extract fans are controlled by presence detectors.

LPG GAS provided to the science rooms, complete with automatic gas controls in the science classroom and prep rooms.

Efficient LED light fittings throughout, with programmable PIR presence detection sensors.

3phase supply to specialist machinery in construction and engineering rooms.

CCTV cameras throughout building, connected to school’s security system.

SITEWORKS

The new modular building was installed on an existing hardstanding area. As we were operating within a busy school environment it was important to always ensure the safety of the students and ensure that the construction works did not impact on the school. Separate access for construction works was achieved with the introduction of a temporary access road and temporary fencing.

There was significant trenching and ducting required to connect electrical cable and IT services back to the existing school which was over 230m from the modular building. These works were sequenced and carried out during school break with no disruption to the school. A large pumping chamber was installed to pump foul drainage from the new building to an existing connection point over 160m away.
