Mac Zero constructs 80m² modular classroom block for Kilcolgan ETNS
PROJECT INFO
First opening its doors in 2016, Kilcolgan Educate Together National School in Clarinbridge has an enrolment of more than 200 pupils, which is growing year on year.
To meet this growing need for space, and provide specialised education training rooms, planning permission was granted to extend the school’s footprint.
During the design process, the site was identified as an area of high radon. Mac Zero’s approved radon protection process was followed to ensure the delivery of a safe, compliant SET block of three classrooms for Kilcolgan National School.
At the outset of the build, an approved Radon protection system was installed to completely cover the subground below the proposed building footprint. An additional one-meter overspill permitter was added around the complete circumference of the planned classroom block site, and the site was fitted with a radon sump and ventilated area.
All radon-protection works were fully documented and approved ahead of the delivery of the nearly zero-energy building (NZEB) that was manufactured offsite by Mac Zero.
Following the three-day radon protection site installation, the classroom project was delivered and completed within two months, including a retaining wall, soakaway for storm drainage and the connection of the new classrooms to all of the school’s existing services.

SITEWORKS
Following confirmation that the area was identified as being a high risk area for radon we took the following steps:
Fit Radon Sump
Blinding place on top of sump to form level surface
Monarflex RMB400 radon protection lay to cover footprint of building and an additional
1m around perimeter with all joints sealed
Blinding and 100mm of 804 fill then place on top
Underground drainage and cross ventilation strategy for this scheme would then be formed
Project was carried out on a live school environment, with a haul road required to safely move materials off site
Usual connections to ESB, data, fire and intruder alarm to assure seamless handover to school
